The Experience
You will love: An Appalachian trail led path thru Lush forest, grassy meadows and wide open spaces while basking in the foothills of Virginia’s mountains.
You need to know: Virginia's newest State Park is 884 acres. It's mixed use (horse) trails are ala carte and have fantastic signage throughout. Expect in rainier times to stream cross and get your shoes a bit wet.
I took in this hike after fresh fallen snow however its great to see how this trail mitigates water and really shines with light snow lining the ground. This trail is safe for kids 6 and older and pets too. The trail is very well marked ( yes that comes with the territory of being the AT). The trail will start off with a picturesque wooden bridge/ stream crossing and then a meander to a railroad crossing. After its all uphill, its not a terribly bad lung burner but you will feel it especially in the warmer months. I would recommend hiking sticks for balance and if the terrain is wet. The terrain is single-track with loose rocks and footing until the top. Once at the top, you will enter grassy parts of the trail that eventually lead to a wide open meadow (with mountain views) and be a good stopping point for a lunch. From here the trail slithers down the hill and to a driveway crossing, once past the trail returns to lush forest with single-track and a less stressful ascent . Within 2 miles you will arrive at the Jim and Molly Denton AT Shelter… think 5 star hotel of shelters. Yes there are firepits, a shower , a water source and even deck to lounge on. Once you have rested and enjoyed the shelter, simply return the way you came. This hike is moderate because of its distance, its not overly taxing if you exercise normally. This is a great day hike option when you are looking for a getaway and some peace and quiet.
