Maximizing your trail performance

The Intro


Food sets the tone for your performance , limiting injuries and increasing safety during your hike. Before heading out on your next trail adventure lets feed your brain (pun intended) on what to fuel up with, what to fuel with on the trail....and what to leave on the grocery store shelf!
​HIKING and HEALTH:
Benefits of eating healthy on the trail:
  • muscle stamina
  • energy
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Recovery
  • mental clarity

The Good Eats



  • Apple slices – Vitamin C and K, low density, high energy. Tip: Eat with skin on
  • Bananas – Potassium, low density, good for short burst energy & muscle repair.
  • Peanut Butter – high density and fats, calorie dense.
  • Almonds – high density, Healthy fats , high energy & magnesium ( linked to blood sugar control)
  • Organic Honey – Sugar kick! helps with healing wounds too!
  • Eggs – pre hike protein and vitamin D beast
  • Turkey Bacon – lean fats, high density and delish!
  • Avocado: 15 grams of healthy fats (monosatured) , Vitamin C , higher potassium than a banana, can lower cholesterol.
  • Dark Chocolate – caffeine, calorie dense, heart friendly
  • Pistachios – a vitamin b6 boss!
  • Jerky – Salty sure, good for hiking yes… a great way to combat a hot sweaty electrolyte killing hike
  • Almond Butter – high density, Omega rich , vitamin E , heart healthy friend.​

Meal Planning


Pre - Trail 


  • ​Two Eggs with turkey bacon and avocado slices
  • Banana
  • ​Oatmeal

On the trail

Avoid


  • Candy: Sugar, sugar added , no good nothings increase chance of inflammation and reduce the efficacy of your immune system
  • Potato chips: Sorry its true! while amazing for dips and super bowl parties they add no nutritional value.
  • Over processed foods (freeze dried foods): Way too much saturated fats, low nutritional value and high calories.
  • Added sugars: provide no nutritional value, they are sugars added during processing. oh and they have a direct link to heart disease. 
  • Trail mix: Wait What?? Sure it can be a nutritional must have,however most are actually unhealthy for you with gobs of sugar and processed items mixed in. ​​
