What's to like about the trail Compact, quick and less crowds with a big summit showcase. Why go for a hike on this trail: This short distance hike will work you , toss in a few rock scrambles and the ability to combo it with Big Schloss (right across the street) makes this a solid day hike Best time to go for a hike on this trail: Spring and Fall SUMMARY Located in the wolf gap recreation area sits Tibbet Knob. The trail head shares a parking lot with Big Schloss. (trail head is located across route 675 and has a small wooden sign indicating your start on Tibbet) . The trail is yellow blazed from start to finish and is a hybrid of compact single-track, high grass, rock and rock scramble. Do not let the distance fool you, this little hike packs a punch with a stiff 1400 foot ascent in just 1.6 miles. An important note, the trail rambles for just under a mile until the trail forks (this is poorly marked and it appears that the yellow blaze continues to the right) make sure to veer left and head straight up. From here the trail will present you with several rock scrambles to overcome until you reach the summit. The summit is a beautiful view rivaling the adjacent Big Schloss summit. Tibbet's top is a rock outcrop with plenty of lunch sitting spots and camera worthy views of the neighboring West Virginia. To return to your vehicle, retrace your steps but a word of caution to be mindful of the rock scramble on the way down. Tibbet is perfect for avoiding the crowds across the street at Big Schloss so save that hike for the afternoon or a sunset. HIKE ON! |
