The Experience
You will love: A birds perch view of this 83 foot waterfall!
You need to know:
Your adventure kicks off from the South River Falls parking lot, find the blue marked "South River Falls" trail to the right of the bathrooms. The trail quickly progresses downward, its terrain is a bit knotty with roots, crushed rock, small rocks and compacted dirt. To enjoy this trail is to remember what goes down must come back up. As your trail heads downward, cross over the Appalachian Trail (AT) and continue towards the South River Falls Overlook in 1.2 miles. Nearly all of your hike is engulfed by tree canopy so there is little to worry about with exposure. As you approach the overlook, the trail provides a few peek a boo views from the trail leading down to a well defined overlook view of the falls. The falls stand at 83 ft., one of the tallest in the park and is best served during rainier seasons like spring and fall (plus the foliage adds to the stunning view). With plenty of space at the overlook, enjoy your moments there and get mentally prepared for the hike back up. From the overlook turn right and continue downward until meeting and making a left onto the South River Road. It's a short stint but an upward one, as this wide berthed trail aligns with the South River Upper Fire Road. Head to the left on the Fire Road, for an uphill hike through towering trees, ferns and mountain laurel. There is little fan fare of sites along this section however the density of the forest is quite calming and more times than not you will not see many others. About a mile into your walk make a left onto the Appalachian trail for a 0.7 miles walk. The trail is narrow but level and you can easily make quick work of this portion of the trail. make a right onto the blue marked South River Falls trail to return to the parking lot.
This trail is great for your furry family members and kids 8+. The trails are well marked and easily to navigate with little to no natural obstacles to overcome. This is a great day hike starter for first timers to Shenandoah National Park.
