Relive

The technology to bring your trail experience to the next level
Read Time: 4 minutes   |   Best for: Intermediate to Advanced Hikers who track performance

The Intro

I first discovered Relive through a follower on Instagram who shared their recent hiking adventure. What immediately caught my eye was the presentation. I mean, who doesn’t get the feels watching a 3D model of a hike set to inspirational music, with photos blending in and out, all while still showing your performance stats?     After a quick download from the Google Play Store, it was game on. I’ll fully admit: I don’t use Fitbit, Garmin, or subscribe to the AllTrails app. I’ve heard great things about all of them, but this isn’t a comparison or commentary for or against those products. Relive downloads directly to your phone, where you’ll do most of your work. There’s also a web version, but it’s mainly for settings and preferences. When you first open the app, you’ll create a profile—much like Instagram—where you choose a photo and a username that becomes your identity on the platform. And don’t worry, there’s a privacy option if you prefer to keep things hidden. If your profile is public, you can follow others or gain followers yourself. With a community of over 9 million users, including well‑known athletes and explorers, it’s surprisingly fun to build your own little corner of the Relive world.

The Review

How does it work?
Rather simply , in fact bring up the app when you are ready to begin your adventure and press record and then the start button. (Important note: at the top of the record page, be sure to choose your activity). Ok, you are set and from here forward your adventure is being recorded and will present you with real time data such as distance, time and distance per hour.

Recording
While recording your adventure you can stop and take photos. ( I love this feature) The photos taken are added to your performance as a video diary and also added to your cell phones gallery. What's remarkable about the recording is the accuracy of the GPS and the limited battery use ! I tested the app in Delaplane, Virginia at Sky Meadows and also over in Winchester on the Tuscarora trail. Neither area are known to be 5g hotspots. However the app performed well, even during spotty moments the app was able to chart and regain data to provide a robust performance output.

Output
The visual storyboards are fun, interactive and a great way to relive your adventure. The 3d or aerial modeling provides great feedback to understand the topography of your trek. The app will provide you with robust performance metrics of weekly, monthly and yearly. However this app is built to be visually appealing and fun (plus a humble brag for some).

Last words:
The app is fun, easy to use and makes you want to record more. While I wish I did not have to pay $6.99 a month for the ability to edit and polish my experiences, in the end the free app works and meets the needs of trail runners, day hikers and adventurers. I found the accuracy in the data most pleasing and encouraging of my goals. I do relish the opportunity to share the aerial models and experiences in a new way with viewers across social media, this website and more.

Loved
  • ease of use
  • photo storyboards
  • interactive map of your performance
  • accuracy of performance
  • share and post
  • interacts with other fitness apps like Garmin, Under Armour and over 14 others!!
  • sets goals and achievements with badges

Not love
  • Monthly membership just to be able to edit your videos
  • The output to create your video and photos can be time consuming and take several minutes to download ( mine at one point took 15 minutes)
