What’s to like about the trail: Time on the AT, old forest, waterfall and a summit view of Virginia and West Virginia. Why go for a hike on this trail: multiple ascents to work those legs, a waterfall during the spring and cross a state border. The view is worth it. Best time to go for a hike on this trail: Spring and fall however a mild winter day will do Gear recommendations: This is a 2 water bottle trail with a backpack, snack, trail bars and a sandwich. Wear hiking shoes or boots (for ankle support). Bring bug spray in the warmer months. Summary Sitting an hour west of Washington DC, in the foothills of Virginia you will find Bluemont, VA. Bluemont well known for its wine country rests just off Route 7. The trail head parking lot is found on Route 7. The trail itself is well marked and is a popular day hike trail due to its distance and views. The trail is well maintained, it is comprised of dirt and roots with occasional rocks and switchbacks. However, what gives it a little kick are the two ascents that can make the 2.7 miles feel tough. The summit is actually a pull off of the Appalachian trail (AT), with a nice view of the valley between VA and WV. To get back to your car, retrace your steps. The hike back notes trickiness as those ascents become descents, so watch those ankles when traversing those small rocks which like to roll. The hike is recommended for families with kids 8+ and older who enjoy hiking. hike on! |
