The Experience


You will love History and Nature… repeat. Four unique quadrants with 40+ miles of hiking trails to explore. From historical civil war features to thick pine groves to expansive meadows…survey says “YES!”
You need to know A National Park nestled in the backyard of the nation’s capital. The park trail systems provides opportunity to choose a route to fit your needs and wants. Great for families, kids and pets.

The Battlefield is perfect for all ages, families and senior citizens. The park is keen to day hikers with over 40 miles of trails offered throughout its four quadrants. The Visitor Center area, Stone House and Stone Bridge are popular tourist areas.
​Your adventure begins, with the Matthews Hill Trail Loop (parking off route 234 by unfinished railroad). This trail provides a little bit of everything. It starts with lush pine groves and dense forest (come early for wildlife viewing), well defined trails and the opportunity to explore via multiple off shoot trails. Either way the trail will take you by the Stone Bridge area which showcases large meadows and historical markers. Then continue across route 29 to Matthews Hill area with creek areas, meadows and forest areas a plenty finally arriving at the Visitor Center for a dose of history. Once fulfilled continue via the Henry House and Stone House back to your car, all along the way you are immersed in beautiful golden fields and wildflowers with a cannon or two.
