Best time to go for a hike on this trail: All seasons, avoid rainy Summary Your adventure begins at the parking lot at Keyser Run road. the trailhead is found to the right of the parking lot and leads to an immediate stream crossing. The trail is well marked with a blue swash leading gradually through the forest to the gorge area. The trail is comprised of compacted dirt eventually become rockier and with great incline. There are a few things to note about Little Devil Stairs, this hike is strenuous due to the elevation gain of 1,897 ft, There are technical hikes areas in the form of rock scrambles and water crossings. As you proceed upward, note the gorge you are hiking within, this gorge provides great cover from the wind and the foliage provides a dense canopy from sun exposure. The beauty of Little Devil Stairs is your entire hike up is a hike up a mountain fed water system, with waterfalls, water shelves and places to dip your feet. The trail continues to navigate multiple water crossings until it meets the Keysar Fire road (yellow swash). Take a left onto the fire road, your ride for the next 2.4 miles. The fire road much like the trail up is well covered yet providing a scenic outlook of the Sperryville area. The gentle decline of the fire road is a nice offset from the Little Devil Stairs thigh beater you just experienced. As you wind down, there will be no change to your trail, remain on yellow until the parking lot where you started. HIKE ON! |
