The Experience

You will love:  Limited elevation gain, easy to traverse & well managed trail and a big summit view!
You need to know:   Cut the trail distance down by using Capon Springs Grade, this dirt road is best served by SUV or Truck.
This trail review of Eagle Rock is the 7.0 miler starting off at the Tuscarora trail head on wv55/ route 48. there is a 1.8 mile version(details below). The parking for the trail head is actually just over into West Virginia. Please park on the opposite side of the trail head (same side as the gate), once parked please cross the wv55 road to begin your adventure. Follow the blue blaze for 2.8 miles until you reach dry gap/ route 609 road. From here cross the road/ parking lot for eagle rock trail to continue, it is .09 miles until the summit.
The trail is very well marked and maintained by the Potomac Appalachian trail club. The trail is comprised of compacted dirt, leaves and plenty of small and medium sized rocks (ankle sprainers). From the trail head to the dry gap route 609 you will experience limited elevation gain, instead you are riding the ridge between WV and VA, it is fast and easy to traverse. Once you reach dry gap route 609 be prepared for a steady ascent, it is difficult but not strenuous. The ascent takes you through a grove of mountain laurel and into a thicket of pines. The summit utilizes multiple rock outcrops to provide perfect perch spots to lunch and gaze upon the north mountain range. The true summit has a stone bench and a killer view worth the time to snap many a photo. once you are satisfied, retrace your steps back to the wv55/va48 Tuscarora trail head.
