The Experience

You will love: Looking for a great day trip, multiple hiking trails and birds nest view of the Thurmont plateau along with, ample foliage and rock outcrops.
You need to know:  No fee required.
This summary is for the entire loop and combines multiple trails into one big adventure. The park system is ala carte and you have the option to park at each trailhead mentioned here and shorten your adventure.
Your Adventure begins at the Wolf Rock parking lot, using purple and orange trail markers. the trail starts with an incline and a few switch backs but for the most part the start of this trail will get your wind going. the trail is a clash of dirt and small rock but winds quickly up. At the junction of the purple and orange trails, hang a right and follow the orange markers to Wolf Rock. The entrance to Wolf Rock is on your left, but what should you expect at Wolf Rock? big rock scramble, however play your caution card here as there are very deep crevices here and footing and awareness are mandatory. The area is really a fantastic time machine back millions of years to understand the area was once a beach! now at present time it is slowly eroding. Once you have played long enough at Wolf Rock, make your way back to the orange trail and hang a left heading to Chimney Rock. Its about a mile until you reach Chimney Rock. i found Chimney Rock much more worth the view, its bold rock face juts out to showcase the Thurmont plateau and Catoctin mountain area. Chimney rock is also (if you are again a card-carrying member of being cautious) fun to partake in minor bouldering and grabbing a good lunch spot at one of the many perches along Chimney Rock. After lunch return to the orange trail and retrace your steps passing Wolf Rock and returning to the junction with purple. Now we move onward with purple heading north towards to Thurmont vista. have no fear from the junction it’s a mile to the vista. The vista itself is a quiet grassy perch, with a bench for pondering life and trying to climb the extestential ladder. The vista provides tree cover from any weather elements and a solid view of the rolling mountains (err hills) in the range. As you continue your trek, next stop is Blue Ridge vista, here we will be taking purple until the yellow trail markers. no fear this again is just around a mile until our destination. I will be frank, the blue ridge vista ranks fifth out of five in terms of our views. It’s a nice hike amongst old growth forest, with a mix of elevation and single-track to get the wind going again but ultimately the vista falls a little flat because of the limited view. Once you have spent your 15 seconds looking at the limited vista, its time to stroll 0.7 miles to Hog Rock , the highest point in the park at 1,610ft. The stroll to hog rock is relatively without much drama, you will come back to the service road and cross (following all signs for Hog Rock), the trail is more gradual descent until the vista. The vista is another fine spot for that lunch your stomach has been asking for or just a nice hardy snack. The summit is a small area so be prepared that you may have to play well with others for time and space. From here saunter onward via the yellow trail towards Cunningham Falls, another 1.5 miles to add to your total. Here is the skinny on Cunningham falls, its beautiful however access via the yellow trail takes you via the handicap trail bridge and the view is partial….. no fun! Continue on the yellow heading towards the visitor center, it’s a meandering 1.5 miles without much up and down so you can roam this quickly. once at the visitor center buy a trinket to remember this day and then find the orange and yellow trail marker at the back of the parking lot and return to the trees headed north to wolf gap parking lot. This portion of the trail is a tough ascent, partly because you have already hiked nearly seven miles and your legs were use to the descent and roam of the last few miles…. yep finish that hike strong with a good lung burn and fond memories of your day.
