What’s to like about the trail: A big forest feel, with quiet seclusion leading down to multiple waterfalls and wonderous fauna along your journey. This is a little gem within SNP south region. Why go for a hike on this trail: A good mileage trail with two big waterfalls to treat your eyes too. plenty of spots to sit and digest nature but also a good incline at the end to work those quads. Best time to go for a hike on this trail: Four season trail Summary Your adventure begins at the Brown Gap parking lot, head over and across Skyline Drive to hop onto a fire road / horse trail as it gently winds down the hillside. The fire road is wide and groomed for ease of use and will be a small luxury for 1.9 miles until you reach the Doyles River trail. At the intersection with Doyles River trail, make a right and begin the single-track trail that will slither alongside Doyles river , meeting up with several small water features (may be dry during fall/ dry period) , including the upper Doyle (28') and further down the trail the lower falls at 63'. The latter a truly magical experience , with small trails leading to the base of the falls. The trail continues towards Jones Run along the same single-track comprised of compacted dirt, roots and small rocks. The trail is mostly balanced between small inclines and likewise small declines that are easy to navigate. From the lower Doyles Falls, saunter another 1.0 miles to Jones Run falls, a picturesque 42' waterfall cascading a large granite face. This spot has plenty of close natural seating areas to enjoy a lunch or snack while the sounds of the falls play for your background serenade. Once recharged from jones run falls, continue your adventure for a 1.7 mile tough ascent to a meeting with the Appalachian trail. At the intersection with the AT (Appalachian trail) make a right onto it (white hash) and go for 1.2 miles back to Brown Gap parking lot. This portion will feel great on your legs as there is little to no elevation gain or loss for the remainder of your adventure. The entire trek of 6.5 miles should span 3 to 5 hours and be noted that while pet friendly, it is quite a taxing adventure for our furry friends HIKE ON! |
