The Experience
You will love: Let's ride the AT roller coaster for a hot minute and be guaranteed a wonderful summit view.
You need to know: Pet & family friendly, lots of rocks and boulders to explore without the big distance hike.
Bears Den is a fun filled short day hike in Bluemont, Va. You can easily add to your hike by pairing this hike up with Ravens Rocks (they share the same parking lot). To get to the Bears Den Overlook you will use the Appalachian Trail, the entrance is found at the middle of the parking lot. Want more of a sell? this hike is part of a larger region of the A.T known as the roller-coaster. Bears Den is a mere 1.9 miles in total distance yet fun is to be had with a trail that is littered with small rocks, boulders and a relatively light elevation gain (just shy of 300 ft). The summit is a large rock outcrop with ample areas to sit and look out across the Virginia skyline and even catch the Shenandoah River as well. The summit also has areas with crevices and holes for your kids to explore and raise your blood pressure. Once you have taken in the sites, retrace your steps to the parking lot.
